Specializing in the fields of graphic design, visual communication and typography as well as the artistic supervision of publishing projects, the deValence studio, based in Paris, has, since its beginnings in 2001, emerged as a major player in French and European cultural circles. Designing publications, visual identities, signage, internet sites and interfaces for a variety of contexts, both public and private, it has carried out projects for cultural institutions, publishing houses, commercial brands, press associations, artists, architects, etc. At deValence, importance is given to an approach based on dialogue and on a careful analysis of both the content and the context in which it is to be placed. Working within a tradition of graphic design that is both rigorous and innovative, it regards the graphic object as the outcome of this process, as a visual response specific to the specific requirements of the commission. In its designs for visual identities, the studio has shown its ability to come up with graphic designs that are both unique and flexible, suitable for long-term use and for application onto a variety of supports. deValence elucidates the processes involved in reading. Its projects are characterized by a dynamic approach to the relationship between text and image and by its particular attention to clarity of page design and to the structure of the object itself. Page, book or screen, they are all spaces producing meaning, involving an intimate dialogue between support, form and content.
