Our story: The Liberty Accounts story began in 1996 when Alan Wright, who had developed and implemented IT solutions at global financial giants such as American Express and Ernst & Young, launched his own consultancy, Athene Systems, to develop bespoke software for streamlining business processes. In 2000, Alan was joined by Paul Taylor, who had served as a senior executive at several blue chip European companies including Arjo Wiggins Appleton, and who had an impressive record of developing solutions and creating value in financial management and IT. Later the team was rounded out by the addition of Neil Chadwick with extensive knowledge and experience of the business accounting software sector. Athene created Liberty as a managed online accounting and payroll software service long before many business sectors had identified the trend of software as a service (SaaS) becoming a delivery model for various applications. Anticipating that business financial management and payroll would become the sector with the most potential, we made significant investment into developing a range of innovative, specialist products. Alan has provided the technical lead throughout Liberty’s evolution while Paul, a management accountant with more than 30 years experience in industry, acts as an advocate for user needs in our development process. The first software came to fruition as early as 2001 and we have been providing cloud-based service to our growing number of customers since 2003. The increasing functionality of Liberty—now the sole activity of Athene—has been enabled by sustained growth. Liberty allows businesses to select options from fully integrated bookkeeping, branch reporting, payroll, stock management, asset management and P11D. Moreover, we are probably the only profitable provider of online accounting software in the country at the present time. Liberty’s sustained organic growth, enabled by our broadening commercial user base, has placed us in a strong position to engage with the wider community. For example, we are currently extending the convenience and time-saving benefits of online accounting to the UK charities sector as we develop special features needed to fulfil their very specific needs. Indeed, Liberty now delivers the UK’s only online service that meets the sectors’ accounting requirement and reporting under the new standard introduced in January 2015.
